Recovery Services (RS)
Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC) provides Recovery Services (RS) as part of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. Effective in the Fall of 2022, SAPC now allows patients enrolled in all levels of care to be concurrently enrolled in Recovery Services, formerly Recovery Support Services.
Recovery Services assists patients in remaining engaged in care supportive of their recovery, thereby reducing the likelihood of relapse while in treatment or when Recovery Services is offered as a standalone service after treatment.TTC provides these services to all patients in our programs, whether they complete treatment successfully or not.
Since substance use disorder is a complex brain disease that can affect all aspects of a person’s life. The RS program aims to help patients from a multidimensional perspective. TTC guides patients in the right direction by offering this level of support. Leaning on this guidance, many patients achieve a path of long-term recovery, avoiding the dangers of relapse.
Types of Recovery Services
These services at TTC are provided in person and via telephone/telehealth options.
The types of services include:
- Vocational Training
- Life Skills Development
- Educational Opportunities
- Self-Help Groups like 12-Step Programs
- Primary Medical Care
- Housing Options
- Transportation
- Ongoing Counseling
- Family Therapy
- Group Counseling
- Recovery monitoring
- Ongoing Care Coordination
An essential part of these services is to maintain the advances made while the patient was first getting sober. Participating in an aftercare program makes patients more likely to stay sober once they finish treatment and return to daily life.
The RS Program and Relapse Prevention
When a patient has RS as a standalone service, a patient can get the support of one-on-one counseling, family therapy, relapse monitoring, and all the other services offered.
Relapse prevention is a critical element of RS and the prime focus of ongoing case management. For most patients, a substance use disorder is a chronic disease that requires consistent work and mindfulness.
By offering recovery services at all levels of care, relapse prevention becomes the primary focus of support, along with tracking and building a patient’s self-efficacy. Such tracking includes the patient’s ability to independently utilize coping skills and resources. By illuminating triggers during treatment and keeping track of them through all transitions of care, a patient avoids the pitfalls of relapse. They increase distress tolerance through mindfulness and self-awareness.
Patients participating in Recovery Services are assessed from a multidimensional perspective. The ASAM Assessment aims to identify specific needs and challenges, including relapse potential. It also solicits strengths and resources while evaluating an individual’s motivation. The goal is to foster the willingness to create a positive recovery environment.
Post-assessment, topics covered include:
- Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT)
- The Importance of Exercise
- The Benefits of Good Nutrition
- Sleep Cycles and Insomnia
- The Process of Self-Monitoring
- Managing Physical and Emotional Pain
- Meditation and Mindfulness
- Advanced Relapse Prevention Techniques
- Advanced Social and Relationship Skills
The TTC Community and Recovery Services
Once patients enter a TTC program, they become part of the TTC community. Recovery Services are a true reflection of this community. By helping patients during treatment and after completion, the recovery team expresses care for individuals. The goal is relapse prevention and multidimensional support that leads to happy and productive lives.
Part of creating a positive recovery environment is attending psychoeducational relapse prevention groups. These groups provide opportunities for those in RS to increase social support and sober networking. Such connections increase the likelihood of a person utilizing self-efficacy to seek outside help beyond traditional treatment interventions.
RS groups are focused on finding interventions in the transition to everyday life outside of treatment that will reduce the likelihood of relapse by addressing triggers and formulating effective coping strategies that can be utilized when impacted by day-to-day stressors in the milieu of social interactions.
The groups are available to Patients in SAPC-funded treatment programs, people in Recovery Services, and Outpatient participants seeking continued support and relapse prevention under the Recovery Services umbrella. SAPC no longer requires a diagnosis of being in remission to access Recovery Services. As mentioned above, it is available to support relapse prevention throughout the continuum of care.

Completion of Recovery Services and the Next Steps
Successful completion of RS occurs when the patient has reached a level of self-efficacy and has actively participated in the program for 365 days (about 12 months) to where they are at a level at which they can succeed independently.
Full participation in Recovery Services means attending groups, weekly individualized meetings with their RS care coordinator, completing treatment plans, and accessing necessary referrals needed for a life the participants believe is worth living. The goal of Recovery Services is to move forward successfully in life with a durable base of recovery.
