Model Cara Delevingne Reveals Substance Abuse and Mental Health Struggles

Substance abuse and mental health struggles often go together and do not discriminate. It does not matter whether you are a man or a woman, white or black, rich or poor, straight or gay. As British model Cara Delevingne reveals in the latest issue of Vogue magazine, substance abuse, and mental health struggles affect everyone and anyone. At Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC), our treatment staff understands that patients come in every size, color, and form. Thus, with open arms, we accept, with informed care and cultural competency, whoever needs help.

Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2012 and 2014, Cara Delevingne is beautiful and successful. Starring as the Enchantress in the comic book film Suicide Squad (2016) and as Vignette Stonemoss in the Showtime series Carnival Row, she thrives on both the big and small screen. Despite such a record of accomplishment, Cara Delevingne expresses how substance abuse and mental health struggles overwhelm her life.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Struggles

The 30-year-old model and actor is open when discussing her history of substance abuse and mental health struggles. Rather than talking about recovery, she talks about healing. Since it is an ongoing process, she believes she is always healing in sobriety. Given her difficulties, she is happy to be doing so well today at age 30.

As she explains in Stylist magazine, “If I fail at something, it’s the worst thing in the world because I never forgive myself. I didn’t feel like I was ever good enough… Honestly, I didn’t think I’d be alive at this age… Time moves on, feelings pass, it does get better.”

However, she tried to obliterate herself when she was using drugs and drinking. Like many people with co-occurring disorders, drugs and drinking are a form of self-medication. Rather than admit the mental health struggle, the desire is to remove it through self-destruction. Indeed, it is incredible how the two disorders fuel each other.

By embracing her truth, Cara Delevingne turns the spotlight into a healing burst of sunshine and rejuvenation. As she tells Vogue, “Your life can change if you give yourself a chance to really be who you are and sit in that uncomfortability, because my God, it’s uncomfortable! But it gets better—and it’s worth it.”
