Teen Marijuana Use and the Dangers of Driving Under the Influence of THC
New studies show that teen marijuana use is on the rise. Moreover, teenagers are willing to drive under the influence of marijuana. As marijuana legalization spreads across the United States, the perception of its risks has shifted, particularly among teenagers. Too many people view teen marijuana use as acceptable. However, the reality is that driving under the influence of marijuana poses significant dangers. In addition, these risks are both to the user and others on the road. Despite such hazards, teen marijuana use is increasing, leading to a troubling rise in drug-impaired driving among this vulnerable age group.
Indeed, Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC) warns against a lax attitude toward teen marijuana use. Moreover, Dr. Guohua Li, professor of epidemiology and the founding director of the Center for Injury Science and Prevention at Columbia University, explains the dangers. Dr. Li is the author of several studies on marijuana and driving. He believes that driving under the influence of marijuana is as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.
As Dr. Li explains, “Marijuana is very different from alcohol in important ways. And one of them is that the effect of marijuana on cognitive functions and behaviors is much more unpredictable than alcohol. In general, alcohol is a depressant drug. But marijuana could act on the central nervous system as a depressant, a stimulant, and a hallucinogenic substance.”
The Impact of Teen Marijuana Use on Driving
Dr. Li’s studies show that driving under the influence of marijuana impairs critical functions necessary for safe driving. These vital functions include motor coordination, reaction time, and judgment. Moreover, THC, the psychoactive component in marijuana, slows down a driver’s reaction time. It also impairs their ability to make quick decisions. Such mental acuity often is the difference between avoiding an accident and becoming another tragic statistic.
Additionally, marijuana use can cause distorted perceptions, leading to poor lane tracking and difficulty in maintaining a consistent speed. For teenagers, already at a higher risk of traffic accidents due to inexperience, driving under the influence of marijuana compounds these dangers. Despite this, many teens mistakenly believe that marijuana is less impairing than alcohol. Thus, they think they can drive safely while under its influence. This misconception is particularly concerning as teen marijuana use becomes more common.
