National Suicide Prevention Month a Call to Positive Action

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the harrowing reality of suicide and the importance of mental health care. Nationwide, this observance highlights the struggles faced by millions of people who battle suicidal thoughts. Underlying mental health issues and substance use disorders generate such negative patterns of thinking.

At Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC), National Suicide Prevention Month serves as a critical reminder that prevention is possible. Indeed, timely interventions save countless lives. To save lives, however, taking action needs to be a priority. Therefore, TTC views this month as a time to enact a call to positive actions and preventative steps.

Origins of National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention Month

The origins of Suicide Prevention Month can be traced back to the late 20th century. TTC is grateful for the work of mental health advocates and organizations. By pushing for greater awareness of suicide as a public health issue, the issue of suicide became a priority. As awareness grew, the observance became a month-long initiative, encouraging broader public participation and engagement in suicide prevention efforts.

National Suicide Prevention Month emphasizes that suicide is often the tragic culmination of untreated or poorly managed mental health conditions. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders often distort a person’s thinking. Hence, such mental health challenges frequently make people believe their situation is hopeless. Additionally, substance use disorders (SUD) further complicate this issue. Indeed, the use of drugs and alcohol can exacerbate feelings of despair, impairing judgment. Such impairment increases impulsivity, making suicidal impulses and actions more likely.

As Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, Ph.D., the Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use expresses in an Official Statement on the SAMHSA website, “Every September, we recognize Suicide Prevention Month as a time to continue learning about suicide prevention, remember those we have lost to suicide, and acknowledge the many individuals, families, and communities that have been impacted by suicide… In the United States, someone dies by suicide every 11 minutes. Suicide affects every race, gender, ethnic group, and orientation, so it’s important to know and spread the word that suicide is preventable, and that help is available… This year’s theme is “No Judgment. Just Help.”

TTC and National Suicide Prevention Month

As a provider of integrated behavioral healthcare solutions, TTC plays a pivotal role in addressing these interconnected issues. For example, TTC offers specialized programs that treat both SUD and co-occurring mental health conditions. This dual approach is crucial because individuals struggling with addiction often face severe mental health challenges. Such challenges like depression or anxiety frequently fuel suicidal thoughts.

TTC’s comprehensive services include individualized therapy, group counseling, and family support, all designed to help patients build coping skills and resilience. For young people, who are particularly vulnerable to the effects of both mental health issues and substance use, TTC offers youth-specific programs that address their unique needs. By providing a safe and supportive environment, TTC helps individuals navigate their recovery journey and reduces the risk of suicide.

National Suicide Prevention Month is a reminder that mental health care is essential. Moreover, at TTC, we are on the front lines of this battle. By raising awareness, offering compassionate care, and promoting early intervention, TTC helps prevent the loss of lives to suicide, providing hope and healing to those in need.

Indeed, there is no judgment and just help. If you or a loved one needs help, please contact us today. Without any question, it is time to take proactive and positive steps.
