Community Education Programs and Community Services

Alcohol and Drug Education and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Awareness

Tarzana Treatment Centers staff provide comprehensive education on alcohol use, drug use, and substance use disorders to adolescents, adults, and families. We offer these services to people connected to specific TTC treatment programs and in the greater community.

Offered throughout Los Angeles County, including San Fernando Valley, the Antelope Valley, Long Beach, Reseda, and Northridge, these community outreach programs emphasize:

  • Understanding Substance Use Disorders and Substance Dependence
  • Prevention Techniques and Harm Reduction Approaches
  • Current Trends in Teen Drug Use, including the Latest Dangers
  • Learning about and Utilizing Evidence-Based Strategies
  • Triggers and Red Flags of Substance Use Disorders and Drug Use
  • Facilitating Intelligent Choices, including Treatment Decisions

Staff frequently conduct presentations at public schools, civic group meetings, healthcare facilities, universities and professional conferences.

Family Education and Parenting Classes

TTC’s family education and parenting classes include prevention and awareness of the dangers of substance use disorders and mental health challenges. In TTC’s family outreach programs, a key emphasis is to support the integrity and health of the family unit.

TTC provides prevention education for parents who want to learn more and are willing to take an ongoing class. These family education sessions range from five to ten weekly, 60-minute classes. These sessions help guide parents, showing evidence-based methods for the following:

  • How to talk to children about drug prevention and mental health issues
  • How to set clear boundaries that maintain a healthy home environment
  • How to strengthen family bonding and foster positive trust with teenagers

In contrast to the family education sessions, the parenting classes are a series of single meetings, each focused on a particular issue. Parents can attend as many as they want. Each session allows time to discuss the materials presented, including a look at specific parenting issues facing participants.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)

Another important program for parents and guardians is Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA). An 8-hour public education program, YMHFA details the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents. In addition, the program builds an understanding of the importance of early intervention.

The main goal is to teach individuals how to help an adolescent in a crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. The class also explains ways and approaches to connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

YMHFA is a free program with all sessions available virtually via Zoom. The training is open to all adults in Los Angeles County. It enables participants to become certified as a Youth Mental Health First Aider and can refer youth to appropriate services. CEU credits are also available.

Youth Outreach and Prevention Programs

The TTC Youth Services Team offers various programs for youth outreach. Many of these programs are supported by state and federal grants. These programs aim to combine education and prevention efforts to prevent future SUD issues. Also, these programs help raise awareness about youth needing further support and treatment options.

  • Future Leaders Program (Opioid Affected Youth Initiative)

Overdose deaths for youths continue to rise. The Future Leaders Program, part of the Opioid Affected Youth Initiative, is a federally supported program to address the youth opioid crisis. The program offers a trauma-informed approach to uncovering the root causes of opioid use disorder. The goal is to foster a proactive environment. Future Leaders provides prevention workshops in schools, training sessions for teachers, and psychoeducation for parents.

  • The Blues Program

The Blues Program is an internationally acclaimed well-being program for youth aged 14-19 (grades 8-12). In six hours of classes, participants learn emotional resilience, reducing negativity and anxious thoughts. The Blues Program gives youth tools to look after their emotional well-being. By providing youth-centered care that is culturally inclusive, holistic, and strength-based, TTC Youth Services delivers such developmentally appropriate evidence-based practices.

  • SAPC Prevention Education Program (PEP)

TTC’s SAPC Prevention Education Program provides a one-time, evidence-based practice session-based education for youth (12 years and older) and adults. SAPC PEP is funded by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health SAPC and is entirely free to the community.

  • 2 Smart 2 Start

2 Smart 2 Start is a TTC Prevention Program that youth services staff bring into schools, youth community centers, and other educational opportunities. The goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of the latest drug trends and substance use disorder issues threatening youth.

HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Programs

Tarzana Treatment Centers’ HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Programs provide educational workshops and training for community members.
