Highlighting the International Day Against Drug Abuse
Annually, the United Nations designates June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. From refugee camps to local communities torn apart by drug overdoses and fentanyl abuse, people are in dire need. After the COVID-19 pandemic, suffering rises worldwide as we are on the brink of a global recession. As a desperate reaction, the opioid epidemic and fentanyl overdose crisis fuel the problem.
Indeed, as a substance use disorder (SUD) treatment service provider, Tarzana Treatment Centers sees the ravaging of our local communities by addiction and overdoses. As the United Nations underscores on its website, “the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.”
Fighting Drug Abuse Begins in the Home
From experience, TTC knows that fighting substance use disorders begins in the home. Parents and guardians provide the necessary tools by creating a sanctuary of reliable knowledge and supportive awareness in the home. Hence, prevention efforts with children are a valuable place to begin the battle to stem the tide of the drug epidemic nationwide.
To help these efforts, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) creates the #CareInCrises campaign. The campaign calls on governments, international organizations, civil society, and all stakeholders to protect people caught in the drug abuse crisis. Therefore, the three main steps to take are as follows:
- Strengthening SUD Prevention Efforts
- Fund Drug Treatment Programs for All Citizens
- Halt the Illicit Drug Supply by Dealers and Criminals
Care in Crises Campaign and Drug Abuse
As a provider of both SUD prevention and treatment services, TTC understands the challenge. In particular, Tarzana Treatment Centers focuses on providing SUD treatment services for underserved populations. Indeed, we know that drug treatment services are a necessity for every strata and population in society. When it comes to addiction, nobody is exempt from the opioid epidemic and the drug overdose crisis.
As the UNODC emphasizes, “World Drug Day is a day to share research findings, evidence-based data, and solutions, to continue tapping into a shared spirit of solidarity. The campaign invites everyone to do their part by caring, even in times of crisis.”
Knowing our role in this time of drug abuse crisis, TTC is ready to do its part. Thus, if you or a loved one needs help with a substance use disorder, please contact us today by calling (888) 777-8565. By asking for help, you take the first step on the road to recovery
