Our Residents are Active in Recovery
With Recovery Month quickly approaching, we wanted to show you how our residents in treatment are active in recovery.
Substance Use treatment is not all about individual and group sessions. Although those are vital components, they cannot work alone. When residents live, sleep, and eat together for 30 plus days, a sense of community evolves that can improve the effectiveness of therapy if it is fostered in a positive manner. Keeping them active and involved in their recovery and that community does that and it also teaches addicts how to be more socially present when they leave treatment.
Recently, for example, some of our residents went with TTC staff to volunteer at the Final Leg Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics in Los Angeles. It was a great way for them to be of service to others and to be a part of something much bigger than themselves on an individual level. TTC was the only treatment facility in Los Angeles invited to attend, and we were proud to be there.
Back in May, TTC staff and residents participated in the annual Al-Impics and won a good share of the medals. This event is a series of athletic events modeled after the Summer Olympic games. Our team brought home 10 gold medals, a silver and a bronze, along with 1st place in the non-medal choreography event. Whether they participate or volunteer in these events, our residents learn humility and a sense of community, and they gain a sense of real self worth.
Not all of our activities occur outside the building. We hold an open mic night on the last Friday of every month. Residents and staff get the chance to present their talents in front of their peers and co-workers. Public speaking and performing in front of a crowd are two of the biggest fears people carry with them, so participation helps residents to break through walls that keep them from finding themselves. Those who choose to be spectators also benefit by learning to be supportive and caring for others.
Substance use disorder destroys the lives of individuals and their families. When someone makes the decision to stop drinking and using drugs, they rely on us to do everything we can to help them reach that goal. So Tarzana Treatment Centers goes beyond sitting in circles and talking, and puts recovery into action.
