Family Support and Parenting Classes

Family support is critical to Youth and Family Services at Tarzana Treatment Centers (TTC). Substance use disorders, mental health conditions, and primary health issues in youth stress and potentially damage the family unit. Thus, TTC provides help both to adults and youth in the form of parenting classes and positive recovery resources.

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights, “Family well-being occurs when all family members are safe, healthy, and have chances for educational advancement and economic mobility… Engaging families as active participants in problem-solving and goal-setting can help them identify and use their own strengths to address the challenges they face.”

Indeed, the adults in the family can access any of the services provided by TTC. Moreover, specific to the care being provided to their youth, families can receive education classes, parenting classes, family therapy, and aftercare planning for the family unit.

Family Support = Support for the Whole Family
Parenting Classes and Family Support = Recovery

At TTC, parenting classes are vital to our family support program. Our parenting class fulfills two essential criteria. First, for parents who wish to improve their parenting skills, it helps them prepare for managing home life post-treatment. Second, for parents who need to satisfy the legal requirement after being court-mandated to complete a parenting course, parenting classes fulfill this role.

As a manifestation of family support at TTC, the class consists of 10 weekly 90-minute sessions. In the classes, participants learn the following family support strategies:

  • Child Development Goals and Outcomes
  • Specific Strategies for Open Communication
  • Boundary Setting as a Part of Effective Parenting

Each session allows time for discussion of the materials in the class. Moreover, participants can raise specific parenting issues they are facing at home. Hence, the goal of the family support program is to provide professional guidance based on evidence-based strategies.

When the family unit is safe and healthy, the well-being of all the members improves. Also, when parents choose healthier behaviors in the home, children follow suit, modeling their actions after the parental figures. Hence choose healthier behaviors and have better social skills. The key is to replace stress and anger with constructive communication.

Family Support for Women in Treatment

The simple truth is that early recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction is difficult for everyone. However, it is even more difficult for mothers with small children and infants. Moreover, these difficulties are magnified when single mothers try to find treatment options.

Who can focus on their recovery while taking care of a child? Who can afford to pay for childcare after they have hit a bottom that leads to treatment?

Thus, as part of the Family Support Program at TTC, parents with small children (0-5 years of age) can bring the child with them into residential SUD treatment and parents can also access Medications for Addiction Treatment (MAT) on an outpatient basis and to support early recovery.

By accessing such a possibility, a parent’s chances of achieving long-term sobriety improve. Thus, Tarzana Treatment Centers is proud to provide alcohol and drug treatment services for women with children.

MAT Services and Women with Children

At all our facilities, we have the resources where mothers can get the treatment they need along with available child daycare. As part of MAT Services, Vivitrol treatment helps eligible patients manage withdrawal symptoms in early recovery from alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder.

The focus of this family care support is to give women early in recovery a greater chance to achieve a sustainable sober life. With cravings out of the way, a woman can focus on the work of her recovery, rebuilding healthy family ties.
