The Tarzana Treatment Centers Residential Experience
Admission
When you enter Tarzana Treatment Centers, you are greeted by a friendly receptionist who immediately notifies Admissions staff of your arrival. You are then escorted to a comfortable office where any questions or concerns are addressed. Admissions Counselors make every effort to assist you in making the decision to get treatment, which is most-likely the right decision.
Medical and Psychological Assessments
Once you have made the decision to enter treatment, a nurse from the detox unit will assess you to see if medical detoxification is required. A psychological assessment may also be ordered. These assessments will ensure that you receive the necessary treatment to recover from addiction. If detox is necessary, read this article.
Admission to Residential
Intake normally takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete. Your Intake Counselor then escorts you to residential treatment, gives you a tour of the facility, and introduces you to residential staff. A Residential Counselor or Technician will welcome you, go over your schedule, and introduce you to a fellow resident who will be your “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” for Phase One of treatment.
Phase One
This orientation phase lasts 7 to 10 days. There is a formal orientation groups that new patients attend within their first few days in the program. In addition your Big Brother or Sister who is a fellow resident will accompany you around the unit and make you feel at home. You will be assigned a Primary Counselor who will manage your case throughout treatment, and you will also meet with medical, psychological, and nutritional staff for various assessments. Every patient attends several educational and process groups during this phase. To limit distractions, phone use, visits and outside passes are deferred until Phase One has been completed. There will be much to read and write during this phase, and you will need to focus on recovery, so the time should pass quickly. You will notice that your peers are as supportive as staff, almost as if they rely on your success. By the time you reach Phase Two, you will understand why that is.
Phase Two
Education is an important part of treatment, so all patients learn about their addictions in this phase. Using a combination of educational groups, process groups, sessions with counselors and interns, and writing assignments, you can begin to see how alcoholism and drug addiction impacts your life. Multi-family groups and family support groups not only help your family to heal, but also offer you better awareness of the need to recover. We also help you to identify personal habits that are associated with negative lifestyles through dress style, hygiene, and leisure/recreational activities. Some of the privileges awarded during Phase Two are phone use, family visits, and passes for meetings and shopping.
More Phases
In both short-term and long-term treatment you will continue to attend groups and prepare for your life after treatment. Counselors will acquaint you with 12 Step programs of recovery, and vocational or educational assistance. As you progress in treatment you will gain more responsibility and privileges, and gain knowledge on how to enjoy life outside of your addictions.
