Vivitrol and Criminal Justice
It’s more common than ever for Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) to be used as a rehabilitation tool in criminal justice cases involving alcohol and other drugs. Vivitrol is one of the medications used. It is a more effective way to reduce crimes like Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and those of a more violent nature, because substance use is often leads to many crimes. Coupled with effective treatment, this approach brings positive change to former offenders, their loved ones, and the public.
Tarzana Treatment Centers has worked with clients facing criminal charges for many years through L.A. Drug Court, Prop 36, and other programs. It is part of our commitment to the community. We have also provided several forms of MAT, with Vivitrol being among the most successful in outcomes. Programs that provide Vivitrol to clients with criminal backgrounds are both in the area of our expertise.
Addressing Substance Use issues with medication and treatment has already been proven to reduce our clients’ contacts with criminal justice agencies (arrests, probation, etc.). Studies have shown a range from approximately 30 to 70% improvements. It also greatly lowers re-incarceration rates by as much as 50%. It can be compared to gas in a car. If you stop filling the tank, the car stops working after a short time. So the idea is to keep the tank dry.
Vivitrol is effective for MAT because it helps reduce cravings for both alcohol and opiates, which are the two major crime-fueling drugs. Vivitrol patients need to complete alcohol or drug detox before starting treatment, and they need to be assessed for eligibility. Upon approval, patients receive an injection every 30 days until treatment is completed. Alcohol or opiate cravings reduce and allow patients to better focus on individual and group counseling sessions that they attend as part of their treatment.
Most of the clients referred to TTC by criminal justice did not decide to begin a life of crime. They became trapped in a lifestyle driven by addiction, and either suffered behavior changes or committed crimes to support a large drug habit. Recovery from alcoholism or drug addiction is the light at the end of the crime tunnel for them and they can once again feel hopeful about a better life. Sometimes traditional counseling isn’t enough or the temptation is too great to return to that life, and Vivitrol and other MAT programs are now available.
